Head of Solutions Design and Architecture

JAVA, .NET, AWS, DEV OPS, IT ARCHITECTURE

Permanent position which can be based in either Bristol, Nottingham or Swansea

The Head of Solutions Design and Architecture (Principal Technical Architect) is responsible for the creation and maintenance of an enterprise capability, to provide an architecture function that promotes the creation of coherent solution, software and security architectures and supporting governance frameworks that enable the organisation to enhance its frontline services though the delivery of strategic digital solutions.

We are looking for a senior level architect with a solid background in solution architecture to play a key role defining, documenting and managing a digital and technology roadmap that will transform the organisation into a data driven organisation, with road safety and customers at its core.

Essential Criteria

  • Comprehensive experience of solution architecture and demonstrable success of aligning IT with business and managing the delivery of associated technical services, solutions and architectures and technologies within and architectural frameworks.

  • Familiarity of modern open source development tools and languages (e.g.: Java / .net) running on cloud platforms such as AWS. Recognized software engineering and Dev Ops / Platform Engineering / Cloud skills.

  • Experience in the application of architecture best practice and governance in application rationalisation, application development and integration the selection and integration of solutions in the process of modernisation is considered essential for this role.

  • Bridging the gap between the technical and non-technical: Translates technical concepts between software engineering, delivery management and service management so they are understood by all.

  • Making and guiding decisions: Capable of making and guiding effective decisions, explaining clearly how the decision has been reached. The ability to understand and resolve technical disputes across varying levels of complexity and risk.

  • Turning business problems into technical design: The ability to work with business and technology stakeholders to translate business problems into technical designs. Creates an optimal design through an iterative process, aligning the user need with the system requirements and organisational objectives.

  • Understanding the whole context: The ability to look beyond the immediate technical problem and identify the wider implications. ‘Zooming out’ in three dimensions - knowing relevant historical context and future impact, understanding how current work fits in broader contexts and strategies, and looking for deeper underlying problems and opportunities.
