Advantage Resourcing are currently recruiting for Head of Information Governance / Senior Data Protection Officer to work with a Major Public Health Organisation in Central London.

The role is a 12 month fixed term contract paying an attractive annual salary band + excellent perks.

The successful candidate will have likely worked within a public health organisation working within Information Governance and Data Protection.


This role will lead and implement effective governance, controls and training to ensure the organisation is compliant with appropriate and evolving legislation and best practice standards. The post holder will take on the responsibility of the Data Protection Officer under the General Data Protection Regulation.

Summary of duties:

  • Manage information handling on an operational basis on behalf of the Senior Information Risk Officer (SIRO) to ensure best practice is followed to ensure data is managed safely and respectfully in compliance with the overarching legal and policy framework
  • Create, develop, implement and maintain policies and procedures to assist staff in understanding their responsibilities in relation to Information Governance issues
  • Provide expert advice and recommendations to staff regarding issues relating to Information Governance, including legislation, and raise awareness of the implications of Information Governance throughout the business.
  • Act as the registered ICO data steward with responsibility for agreeing, monitoring and reviewing protocols governing access to person-identifiable information by staff and partner organisations and ensuring that protocols address the requirements of national guidance/policy and law;
  • Act as statutory Data Protection Officer as per GDPR to interpret, inform and advise the organisation and its employees about their obligations to comply with the GDPR, other data protection laws, policy and strategy.
  • Monitor compliance with the GDPR and other data protection laws, including managing internal data protection activities, advise on data protection impact assessments and conduct internal audits.
  • Plan, organise and chair a quarterly Information Governance Group meeting bringing together appropriate staff from across the business to assure understanding, compliance and incident reporting / review;

Skills / Experience summary:

  • Extensive knowledge of specialist areas, acquired through post graduate qualification / professional accreditation or equivalent experience in a specialist discipline
  • In depth knowledge of complex information systems and management
  • Highly developed, specialist knowledge and experience of working within the specialist profession of data protection (significant expertise in a complex and evolving policy and legal environment)
  • Proven experience working as a Head of Information Governance / Senior Data Protection Specialist.
  • Experienced people manager with experience in managing multiple SMEs and demonstrable ability to develop technically skilled Records Managers, Information Assurance and ISMS specialists and manage their performance
  • Experience leading information governance within a health organisation and managing patient-level data
  • Substantial experience of leading on and undertaking development and implementation of information governance strategies, policies and management procedures and associated complex change management
  • Experience of leading and managing teams to be successful and motivated
  • Extensive knowledge of the legislative requirements including the GDPR, Data Protection Act, HSCIC Code of Practice, ICO Anonymisation Code of Practice and other information law
