District Crown Prosecutor – UK Wide Opportunities

The Organisation

Our client is an independent body with around 6,000 employees across England and Wales, they prosecute criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative organisations. The organisation works closely with the police, courts, the Judiciary and other partners to ensure the right person is prosecuted for the right offence, and to bring offenders to justice wherever possible.

Job description & Responsibilities

You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day management of the delivery of criminal cases, including Advocacy Standards, Assurance, Compliance and Data Quality. As a District Crown Prosecutor, you’ll lead and manage a team of prosecutors/advocates, paralegals and administrators conducting criminal prosecutions in the Magistrates’ or Crown Courts in line with The Code for Prosecutors.

  • Advise on and direct a wide range of criminal casework. In particular, ensure the effective delivery of pre-charge advice and early intervention in large and complex cases
  • Accountable for the conduct of the team’s cases (including agents/counsel) and for related casework decisions
  • Take a leading role in the local Criminal Justice System, influencing and securing the confidence of the police, as well as other Criminal Justice System partners. This will allow the postholder to develop and build effective engagement with community groups that will promote confidence in the organisation and wider Criminal Justice System
  • Provide legal and casework guidance/support to lawyers and caseworkers
  • Draft and approve responses to complaints and Parliamentary queries
  • Lead their team through periods of change. This will be done by clearly explaining the vision of what the Area is trying to achieve, and by involving staff fully in delivery and change implementation
  • Undertake a coaching and mentoring role to develop, supervise and train other prosecutors and support staff within the Area by sharing their own learning and expertise
  • On an occasional basis, in order to maintain Advocacy skills, to appear as an advocate in Court

Qualifications

  • Legally Qualified: The post holder must be a qualified practising solicitor or barrister and must hold a valid Practising Certificate for England and Wales.
  • Academic: Law degree, Common Professional Examination, Graduate Diploma in Law.
  • Professional: Legal Practice Course or Bar Professional Training Course and have completed the relevant pupillage and training contract (or have received full exemption from the relevant professional regulatory body, either the Solicitors Regulation Authority or the Bar Standards Board). Alternatively, you will be a Fellow of CILEx and in addition be a CILEx Advocate/Litigator holding all three advocacy certificates providing them with a ‘general qualification’ within the meaning of s.71 (3) (c) Courts and Legal Services Act 1990.

Memberships

The successful applicant must have a valid practising certificate for England and Wales or be eligible to obtain a valid practising certificate issued from either the Solicitors Regulation Authority or the Bar Standards Board. If CILEx qualified, must hold a ‘general qualification’ within the meaning of s.71 (3) (c) Courts and Legal Services Act 1990.
